Skateboard Guide: How To Frontside Flip

The frontside flip is a trick in which the board is kickflipped and spun 180 degrees whilst the rider turns in a frontside body varial . Sounds more complex than it is. I will describe my favourite method of performing this trick however it is most certainly not the only way in can be executed. The trick is often flipped quite quickly and catching the board at the right moment is essential (much like the pop-shuvit). To do a frontside flip you need to be rolling along (it's very hard to pull of standing still) and place your feet in a "forward" angle i.e. facing more towards the nose than usual. Then pop the board with your back foot, get your front foot out of the way and spread your legs allowing the board to half backflip through your legs.Okay that's pretty easy, now's the hard part. When you get your front foot out of the way you need to drag it off the edge of the board, do this just right so the board flips over whilst backflipping, thus landing right way up.When the board is doing this, you, the skater are completing a body varial (a 180 dgree mid air spin). This is quite natural as all your momentum is moving in that direction, either clockwise (if you are goofy) or anti-clockwise (if you are natural). Catching the board in this trick ain't too hard, you've got a bit of time, so when the board finishes the rotation plant both feet on it, hold it to the ground and ride away
How to fronstside Illustration.

How To Frontside Flip

1. Start rolling at a comfortable speed.

2. Set up your front foot as you would for a kickflip, at a slightly sharper angle. Set up your back foot with your toes on the edge of the tail so you can get a good spin as you pop.

3. Pop the board hard, and at the same time, give a little kick forward with your front foot to get the board spinning in the frontside direction.

4. Jump and spin 180 degrees with you body. At the same time, slide your front foot diagonally off the edge of the board to as you would for a kickflip. However, you’ll find that you need to kick harder.

5. When the board has spun about 90 degrees, it should have flipped once. You want to catch the board at 90 degrees, and spin the rest of the way. So you’ll need some height on your kickflips and 180s to pull off this trick.

6. Land bend your knees to keep your balance. Ride away.

1. Begin by rolling at a comfortable speed.

2. Set up your feet by placing our front foot as you would for a kickflip, with your foot at a 45 degree angle behind the front bolts. Have your back foot on the tail, with the center of your back foot on the center of the tail. Your toes should be hanging off a little bit.

3. As you bend you knees, being to wind your shoulders as you would for a backside 180 ollie.

4. As you pop, unwind your shoulders and pop up the board, giving it as little backside scoop. Your body should also be spinning in the backside direction.

5. At the same tip, jump up and give a gentle flick with your front foot, dragging it up and towards the corner, as you would for a kickflip. Be sure to suck up your feet!

6. When you have spun 90 degrees, the board should have finished flipping. Catch the board on the bolts.

7. Spin the rest of the 180 degrees using your hips and feet. You’ll want to quickly spin your legs 90 degrees after you catch the board.

Skateboard Guide: How to Varial Flip

Intermediate Flatground Skateboard Trick Tips. A varial flip or tre flip is a combination between a kickflip and a shuvit and is a smooth looking flip trick. Learning how to varial flip is not hard; some skaters even learn how to varial flip before learning kickflips! Before learning how to varial flip, make sure you can pop shuv it. Knowing how to kickflips can help too.

How to varial flip illustration

How to Varial Flip:

1. To set up for the varial flip, place you're the middle of your back foot on center the tail, with your toes hanging off a little. Place your front foot similarly to the kickflip, with your toes slightly more angled.

2. Bend your knees as you prepare to pop up

3. Pop the tail and give a little backside shove. Do not scoop all the way as you would for the 360 flip- just a gentle drag.

4. With your front foot, you want to kick it off to the corner, where the board starts to curve up. You want to flick you ankle as you would for the kickflip, but at the same time give a little "shove" to help it spin in the backside direction.

5. At the same time, jump up and lift your back foot and suck up your legs to give the board room to spin.

6. Once the board has spun 180 degrees and has flipped once, stomp on the bolts to stop it from spinning.

7. Once you have caught the board, you want to bend you knees to absorb the impact. Ride away smoothly.

Skateboard Guide: How to 360 Flip

Intermediate Flatground Skateboard Trick Tips. The 360 flip is what you might call a "compound trick" because it actually combines two tricks, the kickflip and the 360 shove-it. To do a 360 flip, you should position your front foot like you would for a kickflip, with your toe slid back toward the heel-edge of the board. Your rear foot should be positioned with your toe on the opposite corner of the board, namely the toe-edge of the tail. The 360 flip is probably one of the most popular street skating moves, and has become a staple of the average street skater’s repertoire. For the uninitiated, a 360 flip is basically a skateboarding trick where you manipulate the board with your feet so that it does a 360-degree rotation while doing a lengthwise flip as well. Aside from being one of the coolest looking tricks around, it’s also a great entry trick into other moves (360 flip to nosegrind, 360 flip to manual, etc.). This article will give you some helpful tips on how to perform a 360 flip on a skateboard.

How to 360 Flip Ilustration

How to 360 Flip

1. Place your back foot on the upper edge of your tail with your toes hanging off. This is so you can get a good scoop. You want to place your front foot in the center of the board at a 45 degree angle, with your heel hanging off.

2. Bend your knees a little to prepare for the trick. Make sure you're balanced.

3. Pop up and scoop with your back foot. When I saw scoop, I mean sweep your foot across the ground and quickly pull it behind you, to make the board spin.

4. At the same time, jump and flick out your front foot to get the board flipping. You don't have to give a huge kick; a gentle flick will do.

5. Suck up your legs to give the board some room to spin.

6. If the board moves away from you; jump in that direction. You want to remain over your board at all times.

7. When the board has spun and flipped all the way around, stomp on the bolts to catch it. Bend your knees when you land to absorb the impact.

8. Ride away with a huge grin on your face.

How to 360 Flip Tips

1. The most important part in learning how to 360 flip is scooping the board. You really want to scoop as hard as you can to get the board to spin all the way.

2. If your board flips too much, or not enough, simply give more or less of a flick with your front foot.

3. If you have trouble staying over the board during the flip, just jump with it while you’re in the air.

Skateboard Guide: How to Nosegrind

Beginner Slides & Grinds Skateboard Trick Tips. The nosegrind is a fairy simple trick, and is very similar to the 5-0 grind, they are the same except you are grinding on your front truck (either frontside or backside), as opposed to your back truck. There is a little bit of confusion between the nosegrind and the crooked grind, so read carefully and you should understand the difference. Learning a nosegrind, also called a frontside nosegrind, takes balance and speed. It is an advanced skateboarding maneuver where you grind your front truck along a curb or a block in a skate park. You must have knowledge of basic moves before attempting this trick.
How to Nosegrind illustration

How to Nosegrind
1. Find a good sized ledge, rain or curb to practice on. Make sure it’s not too high and the surface is smooth enough
Approach your target, with your feet set up in an ollie position. You should approach at no more than a 45 degree angle at a moderate speed
2. Be sure to keep your eyes on the target, and know exactly where you want to jump onto.
3. Pop your board into a clean ollie and shift your weight to your front foot. As you land, only your front truck should be touching the object you're grinding on. You are basically doing a nose manual while in a grind.
4. Bend your knees slightly as you land on to your target and stay balanced throughout the nosegrind.
5. To land, you could either use your hips to give a little push off, or do a slight nollie and pop the board off.
6. Land, absorb the impact by bending your knees, and ride away.

Skateboard Guide: How to Boardslide

Beginner Slides & Grinds Skateboard Trick. The boardslide is the easiest rail trick to learn.Head toward the rail at about a 40-30 degree angle.Ollie, but as you ollie do a 90 degree turn on to the rail.If the board isn't sliding well in some places lean backward slightly so you get a smoother slide. If it is really slippery lean foward for a smoother slide. As you near the end of the rail slowly unweight your front foot and slowly turn in the way you want to land and ride away clean. Boardslides are versatile - they are an easy skateboarding trick to tweak and add to. Before you learn how to boardslide, you should know how to ollie while moving.

How to Boardslide Illustration

  1. Get some courage and ride up at a 45 degree angle to the rail.
  2. Ollie up (just high enough to have the nose of your board clear the rail) and turn your shoulders to get the nose of the board over the rail
  3. Bend your knees as you jump up.
  4. Once your nose is over the rail land flat in the middle of the board and slide along.
  5. On the rail, focus on the end and keep your balance by keeping your knees bent and leaning back slightly.
  6. To dismount the rail, shift your weight to your tail as you swing your upper body around to face forward.
  7. Roll away. Now you have done a boardslide.
  8. Maybe if you fall you will get hurt

Skateboard Tricks and Tips: How to 50:50 Grind

The 50-50 is usually the first grind or slide ever learnt and involves sticking both trucks to a ledge, coping or rail and sliding/grinding along. To do this trick approach the grindable object at about a 30 degree angle or less (the smaller the angle the smoother the grind, but it's often easier to approach at a big angle.) Ollie up onto the ledge and push your back foot out so it lands or the edge (heaps of people don't do that and thus only the front truck gets on. This makes it heaps easier to balance for longer grinds and you will also grind better this way. Cruise along and as you feel your momentum slow shift your weight to the back kick, drop off and roll away.

  4. Bend your knees slightly as you land on to your target
  1. Keep balanced as you ride out the grind
  1. When you want to get off, you can do one of two things. You can either lift your nose slightly and pivot off, or you can ollie off. You should definitely learn the pivot off first before trying the ollie off.

Skateboard Tricks and Tips: How to How to Backside pop shuvit

Backside backside pop shuvit is quite simple and just requires some practice to find the proper foot placement, and amount of force needed to help the board rotate properly. You should know how to ollie before learning this trick. While rolling the skateboarder jumps and the board rotates 180 degrees backside, but the skateboarder doesn’t turn his/her body with the board.

How to Backside backside pop shuvit Illustration

How to Backside Pop Shuvit

1. Set up your feet as you would for an ollie. Have your front foot towards the nose a little more. Also, for the backside pop shuvit, you should place your back foot a little further up the tail, so you can scoop the board a little when pop.

2. Instead of popping straight down on the tail, you want to scoop it. Do this by popping down and pulling your foot back behind you at the same time. Jump up after you scoop.

3. With your front foot, drag up and give a little “shove” forward to get the board spinning in the direction you want.

4. Suck up your legs so the board has room to spin. You want to stay over the board the whole time. Do this by jumping with the board as it spins.

5. Catch the board with your feet, preferably on both of the bolts.

6. Land and bend your knees to absorb the landing. Ride away smiling!

How to Pop Shuvit Tips

1.If the board flips, put more of your front foot on the board.

2. If the board spins too much, you are scooping or shoving too hard. Just give a gentle scoop and shove and the board should spin the right way.

Skateboard Tricks: How To Backside 180 Ollie

The backside 180 is exactly the same as the front side 180 except you spin the opposite way, i.e. with you back facing towards your landing. You should attempt this trick with your back foot in the center of the kick and your front foot slightly above the center of the deck, slightly closer to the heel edge.

This is where all the difficulty comes in. Okay, roll forward at a moderate speed, (this trick is very hard to do standing still or going slow so move with a bit of pace). Start to ollie as you would normally but as you snap down the kick and drag your front foot up, move your back foot around 180 degrees. When you drag your front foot up you should also drag it across the board, helping the rotation. Thus both your feet are working together in rotating the board. Use your feet together, land and roll away.

Sounds easy eh? The trick is to keep your back foot on the board whilst rotating. To do this some skaters Ollie at an angle to make it easier but I've found it's easier to go big and rotate slowly around. If you don't make 180 degrees that's cool just lean to fakie and if you ride with loose trucks (like me) you'll make it. This is one of those tricks which looks and sounds easy but ain't. It's also the basis for the backside 180 kick flip.

How To Backside 180 Ollie

1. Before learning how to 180 ollie, you must know how to ollie! Set up your feet as you would for an ollie. As you step up for the backside180 ollie, wind up your upper body in the opposite direction you want to spin. Have your forward arm cross in front of your body.

2. As you start to pop your board, unwind your upper body and begin to spin 180 degrees in the opposite direction. So just turn your shoulders in the backside direction as you pop the tail.

3. As your front foot drags across the board, spin it 180 degrees in the backside direction to turn the board with you. As you spin 180 degrees in the air, keep your body over your board. Stay centered while you spin in the air.

4. You will land facing the opposite direction, rolling backwards. Be careful not to lean forward or back too much because this will cause the board to shoot out from under you.

5. Bend you knees when you land and ride away!

Skateboard Tricks and Tips: How to Heelflip

The heelflip is like the ollie flip, except that the board spins toward the toe edge rather than the heel edge. It would be wise to learn the ollie flip before attempting the heelflip. Once having mastered the ollie flip, the heelflip is but a variation. In the heelflip, your skateboard flips away from you as you jump. It spins in the opposite direction as a kickflip. Many feel that learning how to heelflip is much easier than learning how to kickflip, but learning how to heelflip also takes some time. The heelflip entails ollieing and kicking your leading foot towards the toe-side edge of the nose, rather than towards the heelside edge as you would for an ollie flip. Your leading foot should be placed just behind the front bolts, not in the center of the board as for an ollie. The combined motions of ollieing upwards by pushing down with your trailing foot and kicking forward and to the toe-side edge with your leading foot will make the board spin. As it spins around, "catch" it with your feet once the topside is up again. Land and rock on.

After you learn how to heelflip and kickflip, you have mastered the two basic flip tricks and can now combine them with spins to get backside flips, varial flips, 360 flips and more!

How to Heelflip Illustration

How to Heelflip

1. Before you learn how to heelflip, you’ll want to know how to ollie at least a foot, since you need some height for the trick. Set up your feet with the ball of your back foot on the tail. You want to place your front foot just behind the front bolts with your toes hanging off the edge.

2. As you prepare to pop, make sure your body is straight and you are balanced. Keep your head directly above the center point above between your two feet. Make sure you’re not leaning forward too much. Just give a slight squat. The positioning may seem awkward at first, but you have to practice this positioning to get a feel for the balance of the trick.

3. Pop the tail straight down with your back foot and start to jump up. Do not jump forward, just jump straight up.

4. As soon as the tail hits the ground, flick your front foot up and out, towards upper concave of the board. You also want to suck up your legs to get the board to flip higher.

4. Keep your front foot up so that the board has room to spin under you. Stay over your board through out the heelflip.

5. When you see the board come back around, stomp down with your feet to catch it. Aim to land on top of the two sets of bolts.

6. Ride away smoothly with a smile on your face!

How to Heelflip Tips

1. The hardest thing when learning how to heelflip is keeping your balance after you pop. As you flip the board, you’ll feel a tendency to jump forward, but be sure to just stay over the board.

2. If the board is hitting your legs, be sure to suck up your feet high to give the board some room to spin!

Skateboard Tricks and Tips: How to Kickflip

The basic kickflip--turning over the board while doing an ollie--is an essential skill for any self-respecting rider. If you can't learn how to do this, you should start looking into another hobby because your street cred among skaters will be horrid. That's not to say it's easy to learn, but you still need to know how to pull it off. The kickflif is the hardest of the basic skateboarding tricks, and one of the most popular skateboarding trick to learn.learning to kickflif first, before learning other skateboarding flif trick, will help you in the long run.
A kickflif start with an ollie, but you flick the board with your foot to make it spin underneath kickflip, the skater flips and spin over at least once, and rides away. You can read more about the definition of kickflif and who invented it in the skateboarding.
How To Kickflip Ilustration:

  1. Step 1

Set your feet up like you would for an ollie.

  2. Step 2

Place the ball of your front foot toward the middle of the board and slightly below the front bolts.

  3. Step 3

Hit your tail as you would for an ollie, but instead of dragging your front foot up the board, drag it toward the side of the board with a flicking motion. The faster the flick, the faster the flip. It's all in the ankle.

  4. Step 4

Stay over the board as you are jumping and the board is flipping (it's important not to push down on the board once you're up so that it can continue to rise).

  5. Step 5

Let the board hit your back foot once it has flipped completely. This is called catching the flip. Your front foot should not be far behind in getting back on the board, but the back foot usually catches it first. This allows you to control the trick on the way down.

  6. Step 6

Land with your feet as close to the bolts as possible.

  7. Step 7

Skateboard Tricks: How To Ollie

The basic skateboard tricks to learn when you're just getting into skateboarding is the Ollie. The ollie is one of the more basic and most important skateboarding tricks. The term Ollie came from the tricks inventor, Alan "Ollie" Gelfand who came up with it in 1978. Doing an Ollie means that the person on the skateboard leaps into the air and takes the board with them using only their feet, not their hands. It's when you push down on the back end of the board and then, when the front end comes up, you bring the back end off the ground by pushing down on the front. Learning how to ollie is the foundation tricks for other moves such as how to kickflip, heelflip, Shove It and Pop-Shove It.

Even though at first it might seem impossible, with practice -- and many failed attempts -- it will become much easier. Once you know how to ollie, you will be able to move on to other skateboarding tricks that begin with the ollie.

You can learn to ollie either by standing on the board without rolling or while moving slowly. It may be more difficult to learn if you are moving because it's harder to keep your balance, and if you fall, it could hurt more.

  1. Begin by placing your front foot in the middle of the skateboard, with your back foot on the very back end. (See stances if you don't know which foot to put first.) Stand with your weight on your toes, so you can push down hard on the skateboard.
  2. Push down hard on the back end of the skateboard. As soon as the front end comes up, slide your front foot up towards the top end of the skateboard and then push down on the front end. As you do this, try to crouch your legs so that the board will be free to come up, making your ollie higher. This will bring the back end up off the ground, lifting the board into the air.
  3. Keep your feet resting on the board (back foot near back end of the board and front foot close to the top). Bend your legs as you land to cushion the landing.
How to ollie illustration:

After you learn how to ollie while standing still or moving slowly, practice doing ollies while rolling along quickly. Do this exactly the same way but push off first. Be sure to keep going straight so you don't lose your balance.

You can also try to ollie over objects, such as other skateboard decks, pieces of wood, etc. This will force you to ollie at an exact time and high enough to clear the object.
